What School Psychologists Do

Helping children thrive: in school, at home, in life

School psychologists provide direct support and interventions to students, consult with teachers, families, and other school-employed mental health professionals to improve support strategies, and work with administrators to improve school-wide practices and policies.

  • Improve academic achievementPromote motivation and engagement, conduct psychological and academic assessments, individualize instruction and interventions, and monitor student progress.
  • Promote positive behavior and mental healthAssess emotional and behavioral needs, provide individual and group counseling, teach problem solving and coping skills, and coordinate services with community providers.
  • Support diverse learnersProvide culturally responsive services, plan appropriate Individualized Education Programs, and adapt curricula and routines to improve engagement.
  • Create safe, positive school climatesPrevent bullying and violence, support social emotional learning, implement school-wide positive behavioral supports, and provide crisis prevention and intervention.
